Thatching and vegetable gardens

On a regular basis (normally at the end of the winter season, just before the rain starts), Chief Israel Ngobeni's wifes thatch the huts in the village.  They cut and collecft the grass from nearby fields.  The old thatch are used for as compost in their vegetable gardens (depends on the season but produce: marogo, cabbage, carrots, mealies, potatoes and sweet potato), which supply the kitchen with fresh produce for the Evening Festival meals and other events hosted at Shangana Cultural Village.
